Central heating and cold weather not only take its toll on your skin, but on your hair too.
Lifeless, lacklustre and flat tresses is unfortunately a given during the next few months, so instead of falling victim to frizz and styles that fall flat as soon as you open the front door, we’ve rounded up the hair products that will help you pump up the volume, in no-time.
Sceptical to try? The days where an enormous blob of mousse and a vigorous backcomb was the only way to create volume, is long gone.
Now you can achieve power hair with ease and in a matter of minutes with lightweight formulas that doesn’t leave hair feeling weighed down nor straw-like.
Instead, expect a full head of locks that bounce and shine from root-to-tip without a sticky finger in sight.
Our testers, all of whom have different hair types, from curly and straight to long and short, took to the test trialling sprays, powders, mousses, shampoos, primers and more for their long-lasting, volume-building properties plus the texture and smell it left on their hair. Here’s the 12 that deserve a place in our hair-boosting edit

Living Proof dry volume blast: From £10, Living Proof
Looking for a quick fix to give your hair some attitude? This easy-to-use volumising spray won’t let you down. Simply spritz from roots to ends then tousle. Living Proof’s special mix of firm and flexible polymers will help lifeless manes of any type reach new heights without hair looking or feeling crunchy – plus your style will hold all day and look remarkably clean the next day too.
Larry King volumising hair mist: £29, Cult Beauty
When stylist Larry King delved into the world of hair products his main aim was to create a range of multi-tasking formulas that don’t harm the planet. Part of his “everyday hair heroes” line up, this mist gives instant root volume and general all-round body without leaving any residue behind. A big plus is the vetiver, eucalyptus, jasmine and violet scents that ensure your hair smells fresh even with an overdose of product.
Aveda thickening tonic: £22, Aveda
This best-selling sweet-smelling volumiser needs no introduction. It’s been giving hair a boost for years thanks to its wheat amino acids. Don’t be put off by the word “tonic”, its just beauty jargon meaning liquid-based. Section hair, then spray as close to roots as possible for an instantly thicker and fuller style, while the aromatic essential oils will uplift your senses too. A great choice for thinning hair or fine patches that need a helping hand.
ghd root lift spray: £14.50, ghd
There’s nothing worse than spending precious time in the morning styling your hair for it to fall flat by the time you’re on your lunchtime Pret run. Fortunately, the dons of the hair styling world, ghd, have created a formula that will maintain your look throughout the day yet still allow you to comb your fingers through your hair without them getting stuck mid-way in product.
Sachajuan volume powder: £22, Cult Beauty
An industry insider’s favourite, this spritz-on root-boosting, grease-busting formula amplifies fine, limp hair while extending the time between washes (hooray!) and makes hair look as well as feel fresh. This Scandi range lives up to its reputation of time-saving and power styling, so it’s no surprise it keeps winning awards.
Amika Vandal volume powder spray: £20, Birchbox
Looking for a featherweight formula that fits into your handbag and transforms your hair in seconds? Yes please! This may look fun and funky on the eye, but don’t be fooled, this is a hard-working volumiser that leaves hair tousled with a little grit. A great choice for that messy bedhead look.
EVO gluttony volumising shampoo: £15.95, Look Fantastic
The name and the packaging will instantly hold your attention while the lightweight product will leave your tresses looking fuller and healthier, but without obvious lift. Follow with the gluttony volumising conditioner after every wash and you’ll soon notice your hair’s thickness increasing over time. Note: If you want immediate effects this ain’t for you.
Batiste dry shampoo: £3.74, Boots
Revitalise second-day hair and add some zhuzh to styles with the original dry shampoo. Unlike some of its competitors, this option feels light on hair and lifts dullness to cheat a freshly washed hair look and it’s affordable too. For maximum lift, spray directly to roots while your hair is upside down. Welcome back to the 90s.
Kevin Murphy powder.puff: £22, Kevin Murphy
For that slept-in look, this dinky powder will provide height and texture minus any stickiness. This sprinkle formula can however be a little tricky to get to grips with at first. So, brush-comb your hair immediately after application for pumping up the volume to the max. We love this tactile handbag-friendly packaging that slots perfectly into a makeup bag or clutch for office to party transformations.
Innersense I create volume lotion: £24, Cult Beauty
It’s all in the name when it comes to Innersense I create volume. This clean beauty range is as much about hair care as self-care. Packed with honey and aloe vera to bring fullness to hair while eucalyptus hydrates and lends a no-frills smell. Not your traditional volumiser, the water-based consistency, though light on your hair, pours out from the bottle a little too sparingly, making it hard to control. Although our tester achieved thicker tresses she would have preferred different packaging.
Virtue Create volumising primer: £34, Cult Beauty
Not your traditional volumiser, this primer contains a protein that mirrors your own hair, meaning it latches on to hairs that needs extra TLC, while filling them up, making them stronger and fuller in the process. Genius. And if that’s not enough, it also contains a built-in heat protectant which mends hair in the process. This easy-to-use weightless spray instantly builds volume and lasts for days. It is without doubt an expensive addition to your haircare routine, but it will make you wonder how you ever lived without it.
VO5 give me texture instant oomph powder: £4.40, Boots
If you want volume minus the gloss, this matte-finish volumiser adds guts to your style in no-time. Dust this easy-to-use powder on roots to give hair extra texture that fakes a back-comb look without a comb. A great choice for fine flat hair, particularly shorter styles. A bargain buy.
The verdict: Hair volumisers
It’s a tough competition but Living Proof’s dry volume blast is the hero product that we keep returning to and never lets us down (literally). The lightweight sticky-free formula, the pleasant smell and the instant lift (that you can manage according to your look) ticks all the right boxes. An all-round winner.
If you want a volumiser that gives you drama and creates an impact for a special occasion, make ghd’s root lift spray your first port of call for extra-bouffant styles that comes at a reasonable price.
